SP22 / ARCHAIC BOX
What comes first, the material or the idea ?

« You say to a brick, 'What do you want, brick?' And brick says to you, 'I like an arch.'
Louis Kahn

« Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together. There it begins. »
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Rarely the question of material and materiality is addressed as a starting point in the design process. This question more often comes at the end and you ask yourself : how do I build it ? During this week, materials and construction technics will not be an afterthought but, on the contrary, they will come first.
As Louis Kahn said, let the material tell you what he wants. This year the workshop will be focusing on experimentation with real materials in order to better understand the material inherent properties and to explore different construction ideas before choosing one and implementing it at full scale. You will be asked to design a small project and to build a prototype by using basic principles of additive construction and the use of non-transformed materials : earth brick and wood.
