Exhibition

3rd Biennial of Architecture and Landscape of Île-de-France

The ÉNSA Versailles exhibition “4° Celsius entre toi et moi” (4° Celsius between you and me) is based on the observation that France will experience a rise in temperature of +4°C by 2100. Its current temperate climate will become subtropical.  The exhibition looks towards more southerly latitudes, towards these already warmer climates, to find models for building today in France (and in these same formerly colder latitudes) an architecture capable of withstanding this rising heat.

Curators: Philippe Rahm and Sana Frini, architects

The exhibition “4° Celsius entre toi et moi” (4° Celsius between you and me) is based on the observation that France will experience a rise in temperature of +4°C by 2100. Its current temperate climate will become subtropical.  The exhibition looks towards more southerly latitudes, towards these already warmer climates, to find models for building today in France (and in these same formerly colder latitudes) an architecture capable of withstanding this rising heat.

The curators first invited more than a dozen universities to study the architectural solutions that were used in the past, before air conditioning, to survive in warmer regions. They then invited 58 contemporary architects already working in more southerly latitudes, who could provide inspiration for building further north. Finally, following a call for projects, 15 architects were awarded prizes for exhibiting their vision of Paris in 2100, a city that will experience temperatures sometimes exceeding 50° Celsius, periods of heat waves lasting several weeks in summer and heavy rain in other seasons.

Two books have been published to accompany the exhibition: “4° Celsius entre toi et moi”, the bilingual French and English exhibition catalog published by ACTAR in Barcelona, which also invites a dozen architecture critics to reflect on the aesthetic and social transformations of cities with global warming, as well as a book of literature “4° Celsius entre toi et moi” published in French in paperback by Éditions POINTS, in which ten French-speaking writers place the climate at the center of fiction
